Where to see top music performances over the Christmas holidays

  • December 10, 2023

The winter season is upon us, and its time to put on our hats, button up our fleeces and warm up those mittens.

But with the quietness that the schools breaking up brings, and the muffled air that the snow and the cold conditions promote, where are the best spots in London to find live music performances, specifically of a jazz nature?

If you’re near the South Bank, venues such as the Royal Festival Hall have premiere entertainment and musical options with the LPO’s production of the Nutcracker. The show is part of the winter festival featuring a festive winter market, free choirs and concerts and luminous art.

But if jazz is more your thing, the Vortex jazz club is always worth checking out with its innovative mid-week blues jam and popular Sunday evening sessions. Dalston is popular on the jazz scene and another recommended venue is the Signature Brew bar in nearby Haggerston, which at weekends regularly hosts jazz music and comedy performances.

Christmas carol lover? St. Martins In The Fields, the 18th Century Historic Church just off Trafalgar Square, is offering the chance for children and adults of all ages to come together in a short 1 hour programme of popular carols and music, including a few favourites for you to sing along with. Book your ticket for a performance on either 16th December or 23rd December for uplifting music featuring pieces such as Carol of the Bells, Jingle Bells, the Twelve Days of Christmas and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Its not just in Central London where music and Christmas festivities grace the streets. There are also plenty of local carol concerts and community singalongs. On December 17th, there are carols by candlelight with festive readings and mulled wine and mince pies, in Christ Church in Crouch End on Crouch End Hill, London N8. And on December 24th at 4pm there is a family Christingle with a Christingle to take home.

But if you’re in northwest London, and the weather is cold and wet, then Rob Young Piano is the place to be. With a home visiting service, I can teach you some repertoire to perform over the Christmas break. And jazz and folk pieces are a sure treat when the family arrive over Christmas and the holiday period.
