Hampstead & Childs Hill – A Musical History

  • October 1, 2023

North West London has always been the epicentre of London’s music scene, and this is particularly true of areas stretching from Regents Park to Hampstead and Golders Green and beyond. From the Decca studios in West Hampstead where the Rolling Stones recorded their collection of hits, to the zebra crossing on Abbey Road where the Beatles famously crossed on the cover of their Abbey Road album, Camden and Barnet have always been at the centre of London’s fashion and culture hubs.

But its not just pop musicians that have a home in North West London. The area is also home to an abundance of classical musicians, and venues, such as the opera house and bandstand in Regents Park, the Kenwood concert series and backing on to Regents Park, the Royal Academy of Music. Among classical composers who lived in Hampstead include Frederick Delius, Yehudi Menuhin and the composer Cecil Sharp, who founded the English Folk Dance and Song society in Camden Town. Many of these famous faces began their musical careers studying the piano, learning simple right hand and left hand harmonies, before moving on to their advanced works.

More recent additions to the music scene include the Proms at St. Jude’s in Hampstead Garden Suburb, formed in 1993, which offers concerts by top performing artists in June every year, and raises money for valuable causes such as Toynbee Hall.

Further south, and areas such as Camden and Kilburn host many musical ensembles and acts, including the North London Jazz Choir and Irish music ensembles based at Cecil Sharpe House.

All in all, with North London being such a prominent place to participate in music, what better place exists to start your musical journey than at Rob Young Piano. Spaces are limited so call 07950 015269 to book your place today.
